Gulf's history in Endurance Racing goes back for more than 5 decades. It was Gulf's interest in frontier-extending motor racing research that prompted it to bring its fabulous rear-engined "Gulf-Miller" four-wheel drive cars in Indianapolis 500 as long ago as 1938. The cars set many records for the era, but it was in the 1960's that the distinctive Gulf's blue and orange livery became prominent and gained the iconic status. Its association with JW Automotive team became a legendary force between 1967 & 1975 with the Ford GT40, Porsche 917 and Mirage cars. Gulf achieved victory at Le Mans in 1968, 1969 and 1975.
In 1968 Gulf further partnered McLaren in Can-Am, Indycar and Formula One racing. Gulf's link with McLaren in Formula One continued successfully until the end of 1973 season. This association is probably best remembered for its spectacular domination of the Can-Am series between 1968 and 1972, winning 35 races and achieving a first-second combination on no fewer than 20 occasions. Steve McQueen's 1971 film 'Le Mans' gave Gulf Porsche 917 the iconic status. Between 1995 and 1997 Gulf renewed its successful link with McLaren and the Gulf McLaren F1 GTR was a dominant player with several victories in the Endurance series. Between 2008 and 2015,Gulf launched a new chapter in its motorsport history through a partnership with Aston Martin Racing and the association again several victories. The story continues as Gulf will be continuing its association with Endurance racing under Gulf Racing name starting 2016.
