TAG Heuer Launch Monaco Gulf 50th Anniversary Edition with Patrick Dempsey
On the 12th of June, 2018, TAG Heuer and their brand ambassador, Patrick Dempsey, began the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first victory of a Gulf car in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the launch of the Monaco Gulf 50th anniversary edition in the presence of Sanjay Hinduja of Gulf Oil International.
The launch was an intimate occasion with distinguished guests such as; Jack Heuer, honorary Chairman and grandson of the founder and Roald Goethe, Owner of ROFGO Racing. They were also joined by special guests H.S.H Princess Stéphanie of Monaco and her children. A beautiful family portrait that brought together several generations ahead of an intense race in Le Mans and to commemorate what happened there 50 years ago with Gulf Racing.
This was the perfect start to the ‘Road to Le Mans’, a journey starting from the Monaco Automobile Museum to Var track in Le Luc. This carefully planned route follows part of the journey taken by Prince Albert I of Monaco each year in the early 20th century. The journey was marked out in pencil by the Prince himself on a map dating from 1904, on display at the Monaco Top Cars Collection. TAG Heuer decided to restore this legendary map and take to the road like the Prince, from Monaco to the Var track in Le Luc, with Patrick Dempsey and a few special guests.
Once there, the group had the opportunity to drive some truly unique racing cars and complete a few laps in them. A Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a classic Porsche 964, a Porsche Panamera GT3, two Porsche GT3 RS Cup and a replica of the Ford GT40, used by the Gulf Racing team to win their first victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, exactly 50 years ago!
To celebrate this anniversary, TAG Heuer has released a special limited edition of the Monaco Gulf, of which just 50 have been produced. The watch, with its famous 39 mm square casing and blue dial, features the Gulf trademark colours of light blue and orange. The back of the watch bears the Gulf’s anniversary emblem and its serial number XX/50.
But that was not all, TAG Heuer launched a second special edition watch in the presence of the press and distinguished guests at the Gulf Oil International Press Luncheon in Le Mans. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Gulf Special Edition is the ultimate automotive model, synonymous with performance and speed. Entirely in steel and measuring 43 mm in diameter, this quartz chronograph features a notched steel bezel and an aluminum ring with a tachymeter scale. On the dial, one blue stripe and one orange stripe recall the model’s origins. The case-back is engraved with the Gulf logo. The movement is accurate to a tenth of a second – an indispensable feature in a motor racing watch – displayed on the small counter at 6 o’clock, with the minute counter at 9 o’clock and the current seconds counter at 3 o’clock. This model features a finely-crafted blue leather strap with orange stitching for a sporty yet stylish look.
